Louis Rees-Zammit’s tenure with the Kansas City Chiefs may have come to an abrupt end, but his journey took a sunny turn as he arrived in Florida to join the Jacksonville Jaguars. Despite the brief stint and being dropped from the team, Rees-Zammit made lasting connections, particularly with former teammates Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes.
After being cut, Rees-Zammit quickly swapped Kansas for the sunny climes of Florida by clinching a sign-up with the Jacksonville Jaguars. His experience with the Chiefs might have been fleeting, joining only three pre-season games, yet friendships endured beyond the game.
The Welsh player disclosed that support poured in from Mahomes, Kelce, and others post-Chiefs. “I had so many messages from all of them wishing me luck. I’ve been playing the game for three months,” Rees-Zammit shared.
“They just said stick at it and keep working on what you can work on and eventually everything will work out. They didn’t know that I was going to change positions and stuff. So in terms of that advice, then probably not. But it’s more, I’m a very hard worker and I really want this.”
The ex-Gloucester Rugby flyer hasn’t slowed down, earning a spot on the Jaguars practice squad via the International Player Pathway program. The opportunity arose favorably for Rees-Zammit when his IPP program colleague, Australian Patrick Murtagh, sustained an injury, opening the door for Rees-Zammit to fill the designated international space on the squad.
Rees-Zammit also shared that he’s relishing his role as a wide receiver, which lets him utilise his speed and strength.
During his stint with the Chiefs, he played primarily in four roles – as part of the punt coverage team, running back, kicker and kick-returner.
He was largely used as a special teams player for the Chiefs, and briefly served as a wide receiver, but it appears that position is more set in stone for him at the Jaguars.
