Taylor Swift knows a thing or two about being a pop star, so when fellow pop star Katy Perry used her Video Vanguard speech at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards to make an equal parts hilarious and touching comment about remaining sweet to others in the industry, Swift couldn’t help but have the most relatable reaction.
“I would like to acknowledge a few people: my team who have been with me for over 20 years, direct management, and my label Capitol Records. Trust me, it takes a village of strong people, a lot of healthy discourse, and a lot of group chats,” Perry said while accepting the award, which honors both the career spanning hits and larger-than-life videos in her discography.
“My parents and my family, the deepest roots I know. We don’t always agree, but what a lesson that those disagreements can still be full of love. Thank you to MySpace, Warped Tour, and all the bygone places where I found a voice, identity, and a community so early on. Thank you to the friends that were there when my Jetta was repossessed.”
Perry continued, “My Katy Cats: You stood by me for a lifetime, and the LGBTQ community who I recognize I would not be here without and who show me that you can be both kind and cunt. Thank you to Orlando for keeping me grounded, celebrated, and doing the dishes. And lastly for my Daisy, the only flowers I’ll ever need.”
Back in the audience, Swift was seen clapping for Perry for the duration of the speech, though when Perry got to “kind and c–t,” Swift paused and held her face for laughter, before turning to friend and producer Jack Antonoff and giving him an emphatic nod of agreement as if to say yes, she can indeed relate.

The night was a successful one for Swift as well—she went home with a total of seven moonmen trophies, one of which included the coveted Video of the Year for “Fortnight” (she sweetly thanked boyfriend Travis Kelce during her acceptance speech).
