Travis Kelce has applauded Patrick Mahomes for sparing his blushes in preseason after admitting the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback’s insane behind-the-back pass got him out of jail. During their game against the Detroit Lions at Arrowhead earlier this month, Mahomes sent fans wild when he produced the behind-the-back pass to Kelce midway through the first quarter.
After his moment of genius, however, the three-time Super Bowl winner joked that he was ‘p****d’ at Kelce for running the wrong route before he played the pass. ‘Out of spite, I threw a behind-the-back pass,’ he said. ‘But now it’s going to be a highlight!’
And despite initially claiming he couldn’t hear Mahomes’ instructions because of his ‘mumbling’ voice, Kelce has now admitted he was not in tune with his quarterback’s game plan after hilariously opening up on the play.
While launching a new series of his and brother Jason’s New Heights podcast, the Chiefs tight end discussed Mahomes’ behind-the-back pass and said: ‘That’s a smooth operator right there. I motioned over and I’m looking at Pat while I’m motioning over like, “What did you say?”
‘Because here’s the thing, when you’re in preseason you don’t get a week to prepare for the game plan going into a preseason game. It’s just you have the entire 300/400 plays that you put in and installed in training camp, and then they take a few of them and put them in the game plan. So you’ve got to really go over your game plan.
‘[But] I wasn’t in tune with the game plan and Pat Mahomes, he had something on the back of his head when I walked across the line of scrimmage and I was like, “What did you say?”
‘I didn’t know what I was doing, so he was gonna have to make something shake. And that’s why we love playing with Pat Mahomes ladies and gentlemen; because even when you f**k up, he makes you right.’
Jason then quizzed his brother on the route he was supposed to take before Travis added: ‘There’s options in Andy Reid’s offense, and it’s because of a guy like Pat Mahomes that you can run these different options.’
After Kelce took the wrong route, Mahomes faked the handoff to his running back, ran right, and then incredibly threw the ball behind his back to find him in space at the 30-yard line.
His teammate managed to catch the ball and make a five-yard gain, before being taken down at the 25-yard line. The moment quickly went viral on social media, with fans reacting incredulously to the inventive play.
‘This is insane,’ one noted, before another added: ‘Oh, it’s a wrap for the rest of the NFL.’
A third wrote: ‘New move unlocked… that boy just bored!’, while another was a little more skeptical, saying: ‘I dare him to try that in the regular season.’
