Though she has been nominated for the most awards of any artist—12—Taylor Swift will attend the MTV Video Music Awards on Wednesday night without Travis Kelce.
Swift is still the biggest star in music, and the success of her “Eras Tour” has made her the topic of conversation for the previous 12 months. The singer has the opportunity to tie Beyonce’s record of 25 solo VMA victories, so she could be in for a great night…
Swift would really like Kelce to come, but he can’t take time off to be in New York on Wednesday night because of his obligations with the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs will be practicing throughout this week in anticipation of their Sunday game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
After leaving Kansas City on Friday morning, Kelce has already been hanging out with Swift in New York. The Chiefs kicked off the NFL season on Thursday night. Patrick and Brittany Mahomes joined Kelce and Swift to see the U.S. Open final as part of a double date.
Swift is expected to win big at the VMAs, but Kelce’s enthusiasm for her has been thwarted by football on previous occasions. Kelce was with the Chiefs when they flew to Las Vegas for Super Bowl LVIII, so he had to miss the event when Swift was at the Grammys in February.
“I wish I could go support Taylor at the Grammys, and watch her win every single award that she’s nominated for,” Kelce said during an interview on “The Pat McAfee Show” at the time. “But I think I’ve got practice on Sunday.”
“Unfortunately, I’ve gotta get ready for this big old Super Bowl that we’ve got in a week,” Kelce added. The Chiefs star managed to watch Swift win her awards, as he was seen streaming the ceremony on his phone when stepping off the plane with his team.
It was also a topic of interest as Kelce addressed the media on Super Bowl Opening Night as he praised Swift. “She’s unbelievable,” Kelce told reporters. “She’s rewriting the history books herself. I told her I’d have to hold up my end of the bargain and bring home some hardware too.”
After a 10-hour flight from Tokyo the previous evening, Swift made it to the Super Bowl, where he witnessed Kelce win his second consecutive championship with the Chiefs. After worries that the NFL might become sidetracked by the spotlight, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid applauded both Swift and Kelce for their gesture, which turned into the game’s biggest story.
“She’s been great,” Reid said of Swift in an interview on the “Let’s Go!” podcast hosted by Tom Brady, Larry Fitzgerald and Jim Gray. “Listen, she’s a good girl and I’m happy for Trav, and there has been no distraction that way at all. Trav’s handled it right, she’s handled it right, and we just move forward, so it hasn’t been a problem at all.”
