Two of the top names in the WNBA are forward Angel Reese of the Chicago Sky and guard Caitlin Clark of the Indiana Fever. Both Clark and Reese were left off of the USA Olympic team for 2024, despite playing excellently in the first half of their rookie seasons.
Draymond Green, a prominent player for the Golden State Warriors, seems to believe that the USA made a mistake in not adding the two rookies, even if the team is still likely to win gold without them.
Green explained why Clark and Reese ought to have been included on the Olympic team in the most recent episode of “The Draymond Green Show.”
“I think Caitlin Clark should have been on the USA team,” Green said. “It’s great for the brand… It must be about spreading this globally, and she’s the biggest global star in women’s basketball. Just from a pure branding and marketing standpoint, Caitlin’s the biggest. For her not to be on the team. Angel Reese not to. I think for what they’re doing for women’s basketball, that should matter.”
The WNBA is seeing unprecedented exposure because to Clark and Reese, who regularly sell out games and products.
“And by the way, what they showed you in this half-a season is that ‘I’m going to be one of them ones, so it’s okay to bet on me right now,'” Green said. “Angel Reese is leading the league in double-doubles and broke the all-time record. Caitlin Clark is leading the league in assists on a historical pace. They’ve shown you we gonna be one of them ones.”
In their inaugural season, Clark and Reese both smashed WNBA records en route to being named All-Stars. In addition to having the most assists by a rookie in the All-Star game, Clark also recorded the most assists in a single game in league history.
Reese surpassed WNBA icon Candace Parker to set a record for the most straight double-doubles with 15. In the All-Star game, she also made history by becoming the first rookie to ever record a double-double.
Green has played for the Warriors since 2012. Along with Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, he has helped lead Golden State to four NBA championships, creating one of the best dynasties the league has ever seen.
Team USA is headed to the Olympic finals after beating Australia in the semis on Friday. They will face the winner of the France vs. Belgium game on Sunday, August 11.
